“Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.” (Eph 4:2)

Pastor’s Corner

One of my favorite movies is “Groundhog Day.” (Yes, I know, I have a lot of favorite movies.) In case you have not seen the 1993 film, it stars Bill Murray as a cantankerous weatherman, coincidentally named Phil, who travels with his producer and cameraman to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania to report on the big day, only to find himself stuck in an endless loop, reliving the same day over and over again. Through much trial and error, he eventually learns humility, understanding and acceptance, and makes it through to February 3rd.

It is an entertaining movie that, quite unintentionally, extols some Christian values. Rev. Mary Lewis of the town’s First Baptist Church said, “… to me, in terms of Christian values I see that [Murray] is growing as a person. He starts out as a creep only out for himself, but gradually he begins to actually become a better human being.”

Bill Murray eventually comes to accept that tomorrow is not up to him (and may never come) and he learns to play the piano and speak French and make ice sculptures. But he also pays more attention to what is going on in the world around him, he takes time to learn something about the people he interacts with, and he makes it a priority to help the people he encounters along his way. (Sound familiar?) Perhaps the real lesson from the movie is that if we do it right the first time, we won’t need to do it again. The secret is to strive to be a better human being every day.
