Pastor’s Corner
Even if you are not a fan of comic books, you have probably heard of Stan Lee. Stan is the face of Marvel Comics, having co-created legendary comic book characters like Spider-Man, the Hulk, and the Avengers. I met Stan a few years ago and he is every bit as gregarious in person as he is on camera. His initiative and creativity in the 1960s grew to become a worldwide phenomenon today.
But even more impressive than the accomplishments of his career at Marvel is the fact that Stan was married to his wife Joan for 69 years. Joan passed away recently at the age of 95. Stan is certainly not a saint and they had some challenging times early on, but they stayed together.
When I was at the Small Church Gathering in May, I met Roslyn Thomas from St. Paul Presbyterian Church in Louisburg, NC. This weekend, St. Paul is celebrating their 150th anniversary. That is a remarkable achievement for a church, especially in this day and age.
Yet I would bet that Roslyn and the other members of St. Paul would be the first to admit that there were challenges and hardships and disagreements along the way. Being the body of Christ is not about taking it easy or never arguing. It is about hard work and mutual forbearance and the recognition that we are stronger together. And that is an achievement worth celebrating at any age.
