Pastor’s Corner
My paternal grandfather was a primitive Baptist. My dad has fond memories of going to church with him. On Sundays the pastor was going to baptize people, a couple of men from the church would put boards across a nearby creek to dam it up, creating a pond big enough to get dunked in. (Dad tried not to think about the cows that were grazing near the creek upstream.)
And while they didn’t have any music in their worship service – no piano or organ – they did sing hymns. During the last hymn, they would walk around, holding the hymnal in one hand while shaking hands with the other, greeting everyone in the church.
I suspect that many of us have similar fond memories of churches we have been a part of in the past. On Sunday, August 6, we’re going to have an “Old Fashioned Church” service at Butner PC, and we’d like your help in making it special.
As part of the celebration, we’re going to sing lots of favorite old hymns. If you have suggestions, please let me or Michelle Osborne know what you’d like to sing. (It doesn’t have to be in the blue hymnal.) One of my favorites is “The Old Rugged Cross.”
And if you have something special you’d like us to do as part of the worship service, let us know that, too. Perhaps a special prayer or a different way of taking communion. Whatever it might be, please let us know and we’ll try to incorporate it into the service.
Plus, we are planning to have a pot-luck supper on the lawn after worship. It should be great fun and we encourage you to invite friends and family to join us. Stay tuned for more information in the coming weeks.
