Pasto’r Corner – August 22 2017

Blessings from Butner PC

August 22, 2017

“In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters. Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day.” (Genesis 1:1-5)

Pastor’s Corner

Where were you on Monday afternoon? If you were standing outside, staring up at the sky, you were not alone. It was a solar eclipse, the first visible from the mainland United States since 1979.

People poured out of their homes and office buildings to stand with friends and strangers, wondering at the celestial marvel. Some people used solar eclipse glasses to be able to watch the phenomenon first hand. Others, like June and I, made pinhole boxes to view it the old fashioned way. My former college roommate, who lives in Georgia, sent me a photograph of himself, his wife, and their son, standing side by side, wearing glasses and staring up like they were watching the world’s greatest outdoor 3-D movie. And I suppose it was.

It was a celebratory atmosphere. A wonder in the sky that, for a little while, stole our attention away from the many problems our nation is struggling with these days. And perhaps served as a reminder that we are all a part of something bigger.

I think WRAL-TV Chief Meteorologist Greg Fishel said it best, “I’ve always thought that science was a discovery of God’s creation, and if this isn’t an example of that, I don’t know what is.”
