“Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.” (John 1:12)
Pastor’s Corner
On my way to work today, I drove by one of those orange cones on the side of the road. I expected some caution sign about construction ahead, which would lead any responsible person to slow down, be watchful, and pay closer attention, so that your safety would be assured. But instead it was a hand-written sign that said, “Jesus is coming.” And it occurred to me that my reaction to that sign should be just the same.
Slow down – Jesus almost always took his time during his earthly ministry. He didn’t rush from one place to the next, sometimes to the consternation of his followers. We live in a frantic, hurried world, but we should remember that Jesus said we are not of this world.
Be watchful – We do not know the time and place when Jesus will return, so as the gospel of Luke says, we should “be like servants waiting for their master to return from the wedding banquet, so that when he comes and knocks, they can open the door for him at once.”
Pay closer attention – We should pay closer attention, both to what we are doing and to the people around us. Loving God and loving our neighbor – the two greatest commandments – do not happen by accident, but through persistent focus and determination.
Of course, the truth is there are a lot of people who don’t act responsibly when they see a “construction ahead” sign, putting their lives at risk. But if we fail to heed that other sign, it is our salvation that is at risk. The right path – in either case – is to heed the sign.
