“What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?”(Mark 8:36)
Pastor’s Corner
The National Day of Prayer this year was May 4, but I am asking you to pray today. Pray for an end to the violence that is so prevalent throughout the world in places like London, Paris, and Syria, as well as places all over our country like Alexandria, Virginia.
I am concerned about the rampant terrorism. How do you cope with a group of people who aren’t afraid to die? I am concerned about the heightened level of tension in Korea and the Middle East. All it would take is one mistake, one accident, to escalate from rhetoric into all-out war.
One of my most vivid memories of the Vietnam War was watching the television news each night and seeing the rising body count. Today, it almost seems nothing has changed. Whenever you turn on the television, there is “breaking news” about a new outbreak of violence.
I don’t know what the answer is, but I do know that we must cast aside the boundaries of politics and religion and recognize that this is a problem facing all humanity. How did we reach a point where there is so little regard for human life? How do we get back from the brink?
