Pastor’s Corner – May 30 2017

Blessings from Butner PC

“Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.” (1 Peter 4:10)

Pastor’s Corner

Happy birthday!

Now, you’re sitting there thinking, “It’s not my birthday.” But it is – or it will be on Sunday. This Sunday we celebrate Pentecost, the birthday of the church. So, in a very real sense, it is a birthday for all of us.

You probably won’t find a Hallmark card for it, but Pentecost is a gift-giving occasion. It marks the day that God bestowed the gift of the Holy Spirit on the apostles. With the power of the Holy Spirit, the apostles were able to communicate the good news of the gospel to people in the crowd, regardless of where they were from. As I heard one pastor describe it, the people didn’t have to learn God’s language. God used their language, whatever it might be.

Without Pentecost, we would literally be lost. Christianity would likely have remained just a sect of the Jewish faith and we would be worshipping a golden calf or the sun or not worshipping at all. After Pentecost, Christianity not only grew, it flourished, spreading throughout the world. And the Holy Spirit continues to be a gift to us today, enabling us to be the body of Christ on earth.

That is a birthday worth celebrating.
